Picked up my certified teacher contract from the district today. Now, all I have to do is sign it. Things just got real. I’m now a certified 6th grade dual language teacher. Eeekk!! I’m nervous, but excited. I’m looking forward to working with teachers who know the meaning of a true, authentic, and non-standardized education and work hard to provide that type of education to their students.

[US] In decades of debate on school reform in Mississippi, though, one issue is ever-present but draws little public discussion: race.

The state’s public schools remain nearly as segregated, in some cases, as they did in the 1960s. In many communities across the state, especially in towns where black children are in the majority, white children almost exclusively attend small private schools founded around the time of court-mandated desegregation in the late 1960s.

Black children, by contrast, usually attend the public schools in these communities. This is also true in Jackson, the state capital. The consequences have been devastating for the state in terms of educational attainment and economic disparities.

I was chosen as the recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Candidate Award. As a result, I will be sitting on stage with faculty of the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. Prior to the convocation ceremony, I have been invited to a meet and greet with Ira and Mary Lou Fulton as well as the dean of the Teachers College, Dr. Mari Koerner. I have no words to express the amount of joy and excitement I feel to have been a recipient of this outstanding honor. Looking forward to graduation on Wednesday.

Emmett Till’s Family To Go After Lil Wayne’s Sponsors:

Emmett Till’s family is planning to pursue Lil Wayne’s sponsors, as he has refused to acknowledge or apologize for his lyric that controversially referenced Till. The family of Emmett Till were very upset when Lil Wayne referenced Till very tastelessly on the “Karate Chop (Remix)”. The family continue to voice their disapproval of the lyric, as well as Wayne’s lack of apology, and are now planning to go after his sponsors in an attempt to be heard. In a move likely inspired by Rick Ross’ recent drop from Reebok, The Till family are targeting Weezy’s endorsements such as Mountain Dew, in hopes that they will be more responsive than the rapper himself. The family released a video last week further expressing their opposition to Wayne’s reference to the tragically murdered teen.

Listening to your Junior High students singing songs like, “Birthday Sex” by Jeremih, “Panty Droppa” by Trey Songz, and “Cake” by Rihanna is the most awkward feeling as a teacher. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Explicit content is easily accessible to young people these days thanks to the internet.

News: Mental illness. (lost soul, complicated psyche, quiet loner, misunderstood, frustrated with life, experienced recent, traumatic, life-altering events that set him off; not to mention all the positive descriptors that are attached to him, i.e. intelligent, PhD candidate, honor roll student, etc.)
